Internet and Database Applications

Introduction

Welcome to the weekly Lab sessions for BUS800!

Your teachers in the next 4 weeks will be Dr Kehui Luo both from the Department of Statistics.

During the next 4 weeks you will be introduced to a number of tools assisting effective use of the web and point you to web pages with further information. You will also be taught to make simple web pages for E-business using both the HTML and the Microsoft FrontPage 2003, a visual web editor that is available in E4B 214 computer lab. You will also learn to access and query databases in MS Access. We will ask you to participate in a number of exercises in pairs (ie, group of 2 students). Some of the exercises are intended to help you identify the problems which arise in electronic commerce and suggest some solutions. As part of assessment for this unit, each pair/group are required to undertake a project on web page design and creating a simple business database using MS Access. The details of the project have been set on the Internet Project Page.

Please note: This is not a technical computing-based course. This unit is not meant to train students to be expert in designing and building web sites but rather get a general understanding of it. If anyone is interested in this field, he or she can choose MIST822, Web-Database Engineering as the next unit to study.

Practical Sessions: Fridays 3-5 pm (Weeks 2, 3, 4 and 5) in E4B 214.
