Current Students

Division HDR Commencement Week

Commencement Week is a great opportunity to meet students and staff in an informal, friendly environment. All new students need to attend these workshops. Current HDR students and supervisors are also welcome to attend.

Please ensure that you register for the events that you wish to attend.

Welcome Evening

Wednesday 5 March 2008, 5-7pm. Whitely Room, U@MQ Building (C10A)

Essential information for your success as research students: key steps and milestones in the research process, resources and services at Division level and an introduction to the staff responsible for those resources and services. You will also receive the new HDR Guide. This is a compulsory event for students who have started since the 2007 Commencement Program on 8 March. Refreshments will be provided.

The program is now available.

Introduction to the Library

Thursday 6 March 2008, 2-3.00pm. Library Training Room 2.

Presented by Library Staff

This tour of the library has been specifically booked for EFS HDR students. Take advantage of this discipline focussed session to ask about resources particular to your research interests.

Being Your Own Boss

Friday 7 March 2008, 10-11.30am. Seminar Room Level 3, E4A

Presented by Juliet Lum

Being a research student is different from other occupations you may have mastered: being a coursework student, working in industry, managing a household. It’s more like managing your own business or a large-scale project. This workshop will highlight what you can do at the start of your research degree to set up your ‘new business’, optimise the use of your time, transform obstacles into opportunities, and reach your goals in a practical and professional way.

Surviving Your Thesis

Monday 10 March 2008, 11-1.00pm, Seminar Room Level 3, E4A

Presented by Wendy Noble

When you begin the thesis-writing journey, a number of issues arise which are worth considering at the outset. This workshop will discuss how to establish a good working relationship with your supervisor, how to begin your proposal, how to build a support team and how to fulfil requirements (relatively) painlessly.

Database Searching/Introduction to Bibliographic Tools

Tuesday 11 March 2008, 11am – 1pm, Library Training Room 2

Presented by Library Staff

This library training session will introduce you to the Library website to help you to find appropriate resources through the Catalogue and Journal Finder, and how to use Databases and Research Guides to find appropriate information resources. Also the bibliographic software available through the Library, Endnote and Refworks, will be briefly introduced.

Thesis By Publication

Wednesday 12 March 2008, 1-2.30pm, Seminar Room Level 3, E4A

Presented by Wendy Noble and guests

Macquarie University’s policy on presenting an HDR thesis in journal article format is available at http://research.mq.edu.au/students/hdrc/rules_and_policy. The workshop will enable you to find out more about this policy, and what it means for students and supervisors. The structure of the thesis will also be discussed.
