Who's Who: Contacts for HDR Students

1. DIVISION

The Dean - Professor Ed Davis AM
The Dean has overall responsibility for HDR students in the Division. You would bring a matter to the Dean only when all Department and Division avenues have been exhausted.

Associate Dean, Higher Degree Research (ADHDR) - Associate Professor Cynthia Webster
The Associate Dean, Higher Degree Research has primary responsibility for the administration of HDR students. This includes matters relating to office accommodation, student-supervisor relations, research support, scholarships, and liaison with the University HDR Office. The AD HDR has responsibility for Divisional HDR policy development and represents the Division at the University’s HDR Committee, where university policy is determined.

Division Research Manager (DRM) - Kerry Todd-Smith
Kerry oversees the Division Research Office team. She also has responsibility for development of Division policy and procedures.
 

Academic Writing Specialists (AWS) – Drs Wendy Noble and Juliet Lum
Wendy and Juliet run the 12- week Transition to Research Program for new HDR students and provide workshops on thesis writing, preparation of funding applications, proposals and presentations. They are available to meet for individual consultations to discuss your thesis needs.

HDR Administrator (HDRA) Sumi Pilkington
Sumi is your interface between the MQ administration and the Division of EFS in relation to HDR students, and is your first point of contact regarding administrative matters such as work space and leave applications, and processes your applications for funding to pay for your research costs.
 

Associate Dean, Learning and Teaching Studies – Dr Leigh Wood
Leigh offers workshops in qualitative research such as face to face interview techniques and focus groups.

Paul runs the Introducing NVivo 7 training course.

Human Resource Manager (HRM) - Jo Pettorino
If you wish to employ someone to do data entry, or translate documents, the HRM can help you with the rates of pay and contracts.

Human Resource Administrator (HRA) – Aisling Hawkes
The HRA processes timesheets and issues room keys.

IT Support Unit (ITSU) ManagerJohn Sims
New students should make an appointment with John to discuss their computer needs.

ITSU Administrative Assistant Danielle Johnson
Danielle is your first point of contact to obtain a network account and for IT administration support. Contact her for anything related to network access, computers, printers, and telephones.

Customer Service Officers - Sue Coleman, Margaret Trevaskis and Kathy Xie
The Customer Service Officers are the friendly faces at Reception, near the main entry to building E4A (level one). They have responsibility for office supplies, stationery, the mail room, name badges, and are extremely helpful in pointing you in the right direction when you are unsure of who to see or where to go. They also coordinate seminar room bookings and building access keys.

EFS Research Ethics Advisor – Associate Professor Lorne Cummings
If you are undertaking research that involves human subjects, e.g. interviews, you must obtain ethics clearance. You are responsible for submitting your own application in consultation with your supervisor and EFS advisor. Applications can be lodged at any time.

Principal and Associate Supervisors
These individuals form your most important University relationship. Your supervisors are critical to the successful completion of your research program. Along with their primary role of providing academic guidance, they also can assist you in a range of ways such as identifying suitable conferences for the presentation of your results and supporting your application for Divisional funding for your research.

Please note that the support of your supervisors is essential to a successful MQPGRF grant application as they attend the assessment interview with you.

The supervisor’s role is outlined in detail in the University’s Code of Supervisory Practice. Read it to become familiar with what is expected of you and your supervisor.
