Special Approvals

Special Approval (Waivers, Dean of Division Approval & Third Time Permission)

Waivers are used when a student’s academic progression is held up by a technicality, changed pre-requisite or co-requisite for a unit. Departments in general do NOT to approve waivers as pre-requisites and co-requisites are deemed to be necessary for the successful completion of the unit.

Dean of Division Approval is required for some special units such as research projects.

Third Time Permission is required for all students wanting to enrol in a unit for a third (or subsequent) time (passing, failing or withdrawing without academic  penalty (W) count as attempts).

Special Approval is a privilege NOT a right. If an application is not approved there is no appeal process for Waivers nor Dean of Division Approval however students may appeal to the Academic Appeals Committee (a sub committee of the Academic Senate) if they are not allowed to enrol in a unit for the Third (or subsequent) Time. Students considering an appeal should be aware there is a close date and see the Dean of Students for advice as early as possible.

Applications open the day the final results are released and are submitted to ERIC. Applications will close on Friday 8 August 2008, except for the Accounting and Finance Department which will close on Wednesday 30 July.

How to apply for Special Approval:

Accounting and Finance:
All other Departments:

Applications are processed as they are submitted by a Special Approval committee in each department according to their rules. The speed of processing depends on the workload and priorities of the committee members. If Special Approval is granted then the student must enrol in the unit themselves.

Approved applications are shown in eStudent and in the waivers outcomes page on the Division and Departmental websites. Applications that are not approved are also shown on Departmental websites. For this reason, students should always check both departmental websites and eStudent.

Any questions about the Special Approval process should be directed to ERIC in the first instance.

Notes specific to Departments

Economics

If a student wants to enrol in an economic unit that has a HSC Mathematics pre-requisite AND they have been unable to enrol in the unit even though they have completed BUS104 at SIBT or previously had a Mathematics HSC Equivalence Form signed off by the Mathematics Department then they should submit an Application for Special Approval indicating that they have already submitted an Equivalence form previously or completed BUS104.

Business

Some BBA units are taught by Divisions other than Economic and Financial Studies. Students who want to submit a Special Approval application for the units below must submit them directly to the Departments concerned.
