What is PAL about?
Peer Assisted Learning or ‘PAL’, as it is more affectionately known, are unit specific workshops led by trained students who have excelled in those particular units. The weekly workshops are open to all enrolled students in these units and are FREE!
PAL workshops function in a group setting in an effort to promote improved learning and understanding of the unit’s content. PAL is a program for all levels of students studying the unit, not just the ‘I’m barely passing’ students. Participating in PAL increases the likelihood of achieving higher grades.
Why join PAL?
PAL can be of benefit to you for a number of reasons;
- Improves your grades. Not just for those struggling but also those individuals who want to turn a credit into a distinction.
- It helps keep you up to date with course content, revision and provides time for discussion based around the more difficult components to grasp.
- Develops and encourages group work and team skills.
- The environment that the PAL leader creates in PAL rooms ensures that it’s ok to ask those dumb questions, a place where you can make mistakes, learn from those mistakes, share your thoughts, have the opportunity to disagree (or voice your opinions) and improve your presentation skills.
- PAL is not compulsory so you will be surrounded by students who genuinely want to succeed and do well in the unit.
- PAL promotes independent study and autonomy.
- PAL gives you confidence to go to your tutor/lecturers for consultation hours.
- You can meet new people within your class/degree.
- Improves your communication skills.
- Improves your self-confidence and satisfaction with the unit.
What previous students say….
"PAL helps you to review the lectures and really helps with definitions. You get to meet new friends who do the same subject and can help you with studying."
“You’re more relaxed in PAL sessions; there’s more interaction; the PAL leaders encourage you to talk and you get feedback from other students. The sessions really increase your confidence.”
“I come to PAL even though I understand the lectures and tutes because it’s a good recap and we work together to find the answer.”
