The Centre for Japanese Economic Studies is an independent research unit located in the Division of Economic and Financial Studies at Macquarie University. It encourages research and study of the dynamic Japanese economy through scholarly exchange and analysis, regular public events and formal course offerings.
The centre was established in 1991 by the late Professor Victor Argy with the assistance of a generous donation from Nomura Securities, Tokyo.
The Centre's Biennial Conferences draw together world-renowned scholars to discuss pressing issues regarding the Japanese economy. Regular seminars yield CJES Research Papers that reach a worldwide audience of researchers and institutions. Public outreach programs include luncheons, media interviews and testimony before parliamentary committees.
Through the promotion of innovative new degree programs, the Centre enables students to develop specialised skills that combine the best of business and language skills with an in-depth and practical knowledge of the Japanese economy, institutions and social structure.
