“The Carrick Awards acknowledge the vital contribution made by individuals and teams to the quality of student learning, from undergraduate teaching to research supervision,” the Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP said.  “The Awards provide recognition and support to a range of teachers acknowledged by their colleagues as making an outstanding difference to the learning experiences of their students.”

Hawtrey is no stranger to teaching accolades. In 2005 he received the Accounting/Finance Lecturer of the Year Award from Pearson Education Australia. This award, aimed at encouraging and recognising innovative teaching practices in Accounting and Finance, recognises outstanding contributions to teaching in terms of: interest and enthusiasm for
teaching, promoting student learning, imaginative presentation of course material, command of the subject matter, participation in professional activities and research relating to teaching.

Again in 2006 Hawtrey was one of six EFS recipients of Macquarie University Excellence in Education Awards. He  is convinced that teachers can make a huge difference, both here at Macquarie, and beyond.

"One way learning seems to come alive is when students get the chance to engage with the wider community by publishing their work in the real world. When this is accompanied by the opportunity to critically reflect on their own learning - especially what they have learned about themselves - it can be a real eye-opener," he said.

Not only are Hawtrey's students strongly encouraged to apply their learning out in the real-world, they also get the chance to get up close as he writes research papers. Sharing his research journey with his students has paid off. Students just love his lectures. And Hawtrey equally loves to inspire and bring out the best in each and every student. It's definitely a win-win.
