Goldman Sachs Global Leader

Shaun Star Two out of the six Australian Goldman Sachs Global Leaders for 2007 are from Macquarie University. Jennifer Purcell and Shaun Star have been earmarked as future world leaders who will contribute significantly to their profession and the world and will receive US $3000 to further their studies.

In addition, Purcell was selected as one just three students Australia-wide to attend the week-long Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Institute in New York City in July.

The Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program seeks to train and develop tomorrow's educators, policy makers, business leaders, research scientists and social entrepreneurs by creating an international network through which they can share ideas and work collaboratively. Two hundred students are selected worldwide including six Australian students from four universities (Melbourne, New South Wales, Sydney and Macquarie).

Purcell, a second year Ancient History Honours student and Star who is undertaking a Bachelor of Commerce Marketing/Bachelor of Laws degree were selected based on their academic achievement, leadership ability, extra curricular activities, communications skills and global perspective on world events.

Purcell is a member of the Australian Judo Team, and as a teenager won Australia’s first Judo medal at the Junior Olympics. She is involved in community and international development work for World Vision and has travelled to India to undertake aid work on two occasions. Purcell also recently trekked the Kokoda Trail after being selected for a scholarship by Clubs NSW.

Star spent the year following his HSC in Germany as part of the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. Upon enrolling at Macquarie University he was chosen to receive a Super Innovation Scholarship for academic excellence in the HSC.

He is also part of the University’s Global Leadership Program; an optional, extra-curricular program which is designed to equip students with leadership skills, cross-cultural understanding and international perspectives and experiences.
