Peter Eddey Chris Baumann

Two Macquarie Academics Awarded ‘Best Interdisciplinary Paper’ At International Conference

Emeritus
Professor Peter Eddey’s and Dr Chris Baumann’s research paper titled 'The relationship between English language proficiency and academic achievement in postgraduate business programs at an Australian university' was awarded ‘Best Interdisciplinary Paper’ by the Western Decision Sciences Institute (WDSI) at a ceremony in San Diego in March.

After receiving their award from the Alpha Iota Delta Honor Society Eddey and Baumann  were then elected as members of the Honorary Chapter of the Society.

Based on an investigation of 1049 graduates from postgraduate business programs offered at an Australian university, the paper examines the effectiveness of remedial English language programs to prepare students for postgraduate study. It was found that students required to take remedial English language training achieved lower grades in their postgraduate degree program compared to those assessed as language proficient.

This is the second winning paper from this academy in which Baumann has been involved. A paper he co-authored with Associate Professor Sue Burton and Professor Greg Elliott, Predicting actual consumer behaviour in retail banking, won the Best Paper Award of the marketing track in 2005.
