Macquarie / NUS Initiative

Professor Chris Patel, Head of the Department of Accounting and Finance, and colleague Associate Professor Lorne Cummings, conducted seminars in October for students, staff and the public at the National University of Samoa (NUS) on "Relevant Standards for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises: The Case for the South Pacific Region". They also donated over 1,000 recently published texts in accounting, and other areas of commerce, to the Vice-Chancellor and President of NUS, Magele Tafafunai Mauiliua Magele.

The international relationship with the NUS strengthened when NUS Finance Registrar, Tuita'alili Puni Punivalu, completed his Masters at Macquarie University four years ago. In fact the links between the two universities go way back to 1980.

" Macquarie University always receives a very warm welcome from NUS. As Macquarie's largest faculty, the Division of Economic and Financial Studies hopes to deepen the association even further through the establishment of a Centre for Accounting Research at NUS. There is certainly the potential. With Macquarie's ranking, in terms of research, as number four among 119 Asia and Pacific universities, and third among Australian universities, I envisage mutual benefits for both parties. Accounting is the language of business, and like all languages, it is constantly evolving," Patel said," so the possibilities for a research collaboration are exciting."
