Stellar Trade Economist Honoured

murraykempProfessor Murray Kemp, a leading trade economist, was honoured with an invitational conference from 8 to 10 August 2006, entitled "New Paradigms in Economics of Welfare and Trade Under Globalisation and Regionalisation." The conference, on the occasion of Kemp's 80th birthday, was sponsored by Nagoya University; the Center of International Joint Research for Economic Analysis and Policy, Kobe University; the Economic Design Network; the Economic Society of Australia, the Department of Economics, and the Centre for Japanese Economic Studies,  Division of Economic and Financial Studies at Macquarie University; and the Australian School of Taxation, University of New South Wales. The conference was attended by leading trade and welfare economic scholars from Australia, Canada, the U.S. and Japan. Macquarie University contributors included Professor Kemp presenting a paper that he has recently co-authored with Professor Koji Shimomura of Kobe University; Associate Professor Craig Freedman of the Centre for Japanese Economic Studies moderating a panel debate; and Professor Jocelyn Horne chairing a session of the conference.

Group photo from the Murray Conference Kemp's contributions to economics, especially in trade theory, mathematical economics, welfare economics and exhaustible resources, have been significant. He is listed in the top 20 % of cited economists in Australia by Research Papers in Economics (RePEc). Currently located at Macquarie University as a Professorial Fellow, Kemp obtained his Bachelor of Commerce from Melbourne University, his MA from Melbourne University and his PhD from Johns Hopkins. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the Economics Society of Australia and a member of the Academic Council for Dynamics, Economic Growth and International Trade (DEGIT). He continues to write and contribute to economic theory through conference organisation and support, international journal publications, book chapters and other writings.
