All classes at Macquarie University are taught in English and students need to be competent in both spoken and written English. Students from a non-English speaking background are required to demonstrate proficiency in English prior to commencement of postgraduate study.
English language proficiency can be demonstrated by one of the following:
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS). An overall score of at least 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each part.
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - paper based. An overall score of at least 580 with a minimum of 53 in Listening Comprehension, 51 in Structure and Written Expression, 52 in Reading Comprehension and a Test of Written English (TWE) score of at least 5.0.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - computer based. An overall score of at least 237 with a minimum of 19 in Listening Comprehension, 19 in Structure and Written Expression, 19 in Reading Comprehension and a Test of Written English (TWE) score of at least 5.0.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - internet based. An overall score of at least 92 with a minimum of 23 in speaking, 18 in listening, 22 in writing and 17 in reading.

Cambridge English Test (CET). A grade of C+ in advanced English.

Combined University Language Test (CULT). A score of at least 70% with minimum of 17 in each section.

Business Preparation Program (BPP). Satisfactory completion of the BPP (which is a direct entry English program) at Macquarie University's National Centre for English Language Teaching and Research (NCELTR).

- Master of International Business
- MCom in Accounting and Finance
- MCom in Actuarial Studies
- MCom in Business
- MCom in Information Systems and Technology
- MCom in Marketing
- MCom in Value Chain Management
Students who need to improve their English language skills can do so at Macquarie University's National Centre for English Language Teaching and Research (NCELTR). NCELTR offers a wide range of English courses and can advise on the course most suitable for each individual student.
