The Division of Environmental and Life Sciences and the Division of Economic and Financial Studies/GACC jointly offer the Master of Biotechnology with Master of Commerce in Business as a double degree program. Successful students will graduate with full recognition by Macquarie University that two postgraduate degrees have been earned.   

Suitable For

The Master of Biotechnology with the Master of Commerce in Business equips students with both technical and intellectual expertise in Biotechnology as well as the skills necessary to manage Biotechnology in the business arena. It is suitable for graduates wanting to gain an understanding of a multidisciplinary approach to Biotechnology as well as acquire functional business skills.    

Career Opportunities

The course is suitable for graduates planning to work in commercialised biotechnology. 

Requirements

Entry Requirements: Bachelor of Science in a relevant field of study with a substantial laboratory component in the areas of molecular biology, microbiology and bio-analytical techniques. Applicants without these prerequisites can enter the Masters program by successfully completing the Graduate Certificate in Biotechnology.
In addition, preference will be given to students with some academic or professional background in business.

Notes:
  • Applicants without previous biology or laboratory training may need to complete a preliminary program of six months duration. Students who complete the preliminary program will be awarded a Graduate Certificate in Biotechnology. This program is only available in second semester and only for full-time study.
  • Please note that a student's MCom specialisation in Business will not be stated on their testamur (graduation certificate) but it will be included on their academic transcript.

Structure of the Course

The MBiotech/MComBus double degree requires completion of 12 units. Each unit requires a full semester of study (160 hour workload) carrying 4 postgraduate credit points. The MBiotech/MComBus double degree is earned when 48 credit points have been completed.

Workplace Internship Option

From 2006 MBiotech/MComm students can elect to take a supervised workplace internship for credit toward the MBiotech component of their degree. Students will electing to take the option will complete the internship in place of ITEC843. Students will spend 160 hours during a semester working on a project in a business organisation under the guidance of a workplace mentor. Students will gain experience of the workplace culture and environment while being involved in a range of activities such as research, planning, marketing and organisation within the context of a specific project. Students will be individually placed with suitable companies and the type of project will vary.

Placement is through Macquarie International. The number of workplace internships available each semester is limited and selection of suitable candidates will be competitive. Students will need a minimum GPA of 3.0 and very good written english skills. Students who satisfactorily complete the project will receive a pass in the internship unit and four credit points toward their postgraduate degree.
