The Graduate Studies Office offers a coursework program leading to the degree of Master of Commerce in Accounting and Finance. This MCom is suitable for graduates seeking to advance their knowledge in accounting, finance and related areas for career development purposes. This MCom program is practice-based, contemporary and taught by a group of highly qualified academic staff and practising professionals. Students can specialise by choosing units in a preferred area, such as finance or accounting. Alternatively, students can take a mixture of units across accounting, finance and related areas such as information systems and taxation. 

It should be noted that completion of this degree does not qualify graduates for progression to membership with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia or CPA Australia.

Entry Requirements: Applicants must hold a bachelor degree with a major in accounting or finance from a recognised university. A GPA of 2.70 out of 4.00 is expected. Structure of the Course

The MCom in Accounting and Finance consists of eight postgraduate units. Students select eight units from the list of units available in consultation with an adviser taking into consideration the student's academic background, present interests and career needs. The MCom course can be commenced in either late February or late July.

The MCom in Accounting and Finance may be completed in one year of full-time study or longer by part-time study. International students must study the MCom on a full-time basis.

International Study Programs

 

Students in the MCom are able to participate in an international study experience such as a short 4-6 week program at an overseas university, a semester of study on a student exchange program or an articulated double degree at a university in another country. These international study opportunities are available to both Australian and international students, are partially funded by a Macquarie Travel Grant and count for credit toward the MCom. Advanced Standing for a Completed CPA or CA Program

Students in the MCom in Accounting and Finance who have completed the CPA program of CPA Australia or the CA program of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia, either prior to enrolling in the MCom or during a period of MCom candidature, will receive 25% (8 credit points) advanced standing toward the MCom degree. Advanced standing for the CPA or CA program can only be given provided no option units have already been completed as part of the MCom in Accounting and Finance.

MCom and Exemptions in the CPA Program

CPA Australia has designated the MCom in Accounting and Finance a specialist masters degree. Under this arrangement, eligible students who complete the MCom in Accounting and Finance in full (32 credit points) and then enrol in the CPA program of CPA Australia are able to claim exemption from two elective segments in the CPA program. Students must check with CPA Australia to be sure they are eligible to enrol in the CPA program before exemptions will apply.

 (The MCom in Accounting and Finance does not qualify graduates for membership of a professional accounting association. Professional qualifications (eg CPA or CA) are achieved through completing a bachelor degree in accounting or a postgraduate conversion program in accounting followed by examinations of the professional bodies.)
