Robert undertook his undergraduate studies at the University of Natal in Durban, South Africa and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1966. He worked for a firm of Chartered Accountants for twelve years and as Chief Financial Officer of an clothing manufacturer for three years before joining the University of Natal as an academic in 1975. During his period at the University of Natal he taught and researched in management accounting and completed a masters degree specialising in management control systems and management information systems.

Robert emigrated to Australia in 1981 to take up an academic position at the University of New England in Armidale, NSW. During his period at the University of New England he taught and researched in management accounting and and management information systems and completed a doctorate in management accounting.

Robert moved to Sydney in 1996 to take up an Associate Professor position at Macquarie University where he taught and researched in management information systems and management control systems. He also served as Deputy Head and Head of the Department of Accounting and Fiinance and Deputy Head of the Division of Economic and Financial Studies until his retirement in June 2003.

Robert is married and has two adult daughters who are working in London. He and his wife now live in Salamander Bay where he is finding the time to learn to ride a wave ski.
